Why do the roof load zone and thermal zone on the data plate matter in Iowa and Minnesota?

Because a manufactured home built for a southern zone and later moved north is under-designed for the snow it now has to carry and under-insulated for the winters it now has to survive. The data plate inside the home states the Roof Load Zone and the Thermal Zone the manufacturer built it to, and unlike a site-built house — which is designed once, for the place it stands — a manufactured home is designed for a zone and can be transported anywhere afterward. Nothing about the move upgrades the home. The Roof Load Zone tells you what snow load the roof structure was engineered for. A home built for a lower roof load zone and relocated to Iowa or Minnesota has less structural margin for a heavy winter than its neighbors do, and the concern sharpens on the low-slope and arched roofs common on older homes, where snow does not shed, and sharper still where a roof-over has been added, since that adds dead load on top of everything else. Ponding and standing snow on a low-slope roof is a condition we report on its own merits and a condition we report differently when the data plate says the roof was built for a milder climate. The Thermal Zone tells you what insulation package the home received. Under-insulated in this climate means high fuel costs, ice damming, and — specific to these homes — frozen supply lines in the belly, because the plumbing runs in the floor cavity under the home rather than in interior walls. That is also why heat tape on belly water lines is nearly universal here, and why we look at it closely: old, damaged or recalled heat tape is a recurring fire-hazard finding in its own right.
