Maplewood grew from rural New Canada Township. After World War II veterans could buy discounted new homes, and development began around Wakefield Lake. The area voted to incorporate on February 26, 1957, with 14,200 residents, partly to head off annexation by Saint Paul as 3M expanded in the southern leg. The city covers 18.05 square miles, including 1.00 square mile of water, and the 2020 Census counted 16,569 housing units. Maplewood Mall opened in 1974. Housing is largely postwar ramblers and split-levels, with newer subdivisions and townhomes mixed in.
