Norwood Young America was formed on January 1, 1997, when two neighboring towns merged. Young America was platted in 1856 and incorporated in 1876. Norwood was platted in 1872 and incorporated in 1881. The Milwaukee Railroad passed Young America by when residents would not pay a bonus, and the 1872 depot was called Young America Station. The city covers 2.49 square miles in Carver County, with U.S. 212 and Highways 5 and 25 as main routes, and the 2020 census counted 3,863 residents. A Twin Cities and Western Railroad junction sits near downtown.

Two historic grids means two areas of older houses, so age comes first. In houses from the late 1800s and early 1900s, wiring, foundations, chimneys, plumbing, and old roofs and porches are the common concerns. Because the railroad shaped where both towns grew, homes near the tracks deserve a note on foundation cracking, though we cannot measure vibration.
