Sewer Scope Inspection in Hartwick

Sewer Scope Inspection in Hartwick, Poweshiek County, by Closer Look Inspectors. Hartwick is a small Poweshiek County village of older homes.

A sewer scope — also called a sewer camera inspection, drain scope or sewer line inspection — sends a camera down a home's lateral line to the city main, exposing root intrusion, bellies and the clay-pipe failures common in older Iowa neighborhoods — a five-figure surprise caught before you sign.

Local housing

Homes in Hartwick.

Hartwick housing runs to early-1900s farm-town homes with scattered postwar additions, across the village core, on rolling loess-mantled till of the Southern Iowa Drift Plain — and that mix shapes what a sewer scope inspection here needs to find.

Local conditions in Hartwick

No Iowa law requires a home inspection before a sale — the one mandatory time-of-transfer inspection covers private septic systems (Iowa Code 455B.172) — which makes an independent inspection the only thorough, buyer-side read on a Hartwick home. Hartwick sits in Poweshiek County, and every Iowa county is EPA Radon Zone 1. Iowa HHS reports Iowa has the largest percentage of homes above the 4.0 pCi/L action level of any state — 71.6 percent in the Iowa Radon Survey — and the Iowa seller disclosure form asks for any known radon test results. Finished basements concentrate it, and only a 48-hour test gives you this home's number. Iowa leaves frost depth to the local building code rather than one statewide number, and the annual freeze-thaw cycle drives the settlement cracks and ice-dam wear that Hartwick-area homes face.

Questions

Common questions.

Which homes need a sewer scope?
Any older home and any lot with mature trees. Root intrusion into aging clay laterals is one of the costliest defects a standard inspection cannot see.
Can a normal inspection check the sewer line?
No — the line is buried. Only a camera can reveal its true condition.
Do you cover Hartwick?
Yes. Around Hartwick the heavy drift-plain clay holds water against foundations, so basement seepage and settlement cracks get a hard look, along with the original wiring and plumbing common in early-1900s homes.
