Sewer Scope Inspection in Pomeroy

Sewer Scope Inspection in Pomeroy, Calhoun County, by Closer Look Inspectors. Pomeroy is a Calhoun County town on Iowa 4 and 7, rebuilt after the 1893 tornado that destroyed most of its homes.

A sewer scope — also called a sewer camera inspection, drain scope or sewer line inspection — sends a camera down a home's lateral line to the city main, exposing root intrusion, bellies and the clay-pipe failures common in older Iowa neighborhoods — a five-figure surprise caught before you sign.

Local housing

Homes in Pomeroy.

Pomeroy housing runs to homes rebuilt after the 1893 tornado, early-1900s houses and postwar additions, across the grid along Iowa 4 and 7 around the 2023-listed First National Bank building, on flat Des Moines Lobe till on the western side of the buried Manson crater — and that mix shapes what a sewer scope inspection here needs to find.

Local conditions in Pomeroy

Pomeroy sits on Des Moines Lobe till — heavy, poorly drained clay that holds water against foundations and moves with moisture, which is what drives basement seepage and foundation cracking across central Iowa. Pomeroy sits in Calhoun County, and every Iowa county is EPA Radon Zone 1. Iowa HHS reports Iowa has the largest percentage of homes above the 4.0 pCi/L action level of any state — 71.6 percent in the Iowa Radon Survey — and the Iowa seller disclosure form asks for any known radon test results. Finished basements concentrate it, and only a 48-hour test gives you this home's number. Iowa leaves frost depth to the local building code rather than one statewide number, and the annual freeze-thaw cycle drives the settlement cracks and ice-dam wear that Pomeroy-area homes face.

Questions

Common questions.

Which homes need a sewer scope?
Any older home and any lot with mature trees. Root intrusion into aging clay laterals is one of the costliest defects a standard inspection cannot see.
Can a normal inspection check the sewer line?
No — the line is buried. Only a camera can reveal its true condition.
What do Pomeroy inspections focus on?
Pomeroy was rebuilt almost from scratch after the July 1893 tornado destroyed about eighty percent of its homes, so the oldest stock dates from the 1890s and early 1900s and has been updated in layers ever since. We date every major system, read chimneys and foundations closely, and recommend a sewer scope on the original streets. Slow-draining till keeps grading and the sump on the report, and Calhoun County is Radon Zone 1.
