Is a condo inspection worth it if the association handles everything?

Yes — the association does not handle everything, and the parts it does handle are the parts that can bill you without asking. The advice that a condo does not need an inspection rests on a misunderstanding of what the association actually covers. Inside your unit, you own the systems and the association does not: the furnace or air handler, the water heater, the branch plumbing and its shutoffs, the electrical panel serving your unit, the appliances, the windows and doors depending on the declaration, and every finish surface. Those fail on your schedule and at your expense, and they are exactly what an inspection evaluates. The second reason is subtler and more expensive. An inspection cannot read the association's books, and it cannot tell you a special assessment is coming — but it can show you the physical condition that predicts one. A roof visibly at the end of its life, envelope repair underway, staining at the ceiling of a top-floor unit, a deteriorating balcony guard or a rotted deck ledger: these are the conditions that turn into assessments, and they are observable even when the components themselves fall outside inspection scope. Third, the inspection tells you which questions to take to the documents. The scope boundary in a condominium is legal, not physical, so the report and the declaration have to be read together. What an inspection is not is a reserve study, a financial audit or a legal review, and no honest inspector will pretend otherwise. Those belong to your document-review contingency, where you should be reading the declaration and plat, the reserve study and current balance, the special assessment history, twelve to twenty-four months of board minutes, the master insurance policy against what your own walls-in policy must cover, and any litigation or rental caps.
