Sewer Scope Inspection in Ames

Sewer Scope Inspection in Ames, Story County, by Closer Look Inspectors. Ames is a university city of dense rental stock and newer subdivisions.

A sewer scope — also called a sewer camera inspection, drain scope or sewer line inspection — sends a camera down a home's lateral line to the city main, exposing root intrusion, bellies and the clay-pipe failures common in older Iowa neighborhoods — a five-figure surprise caught before you sign.

Local housing

Homes in Ames.

Ames housing runs to dense student rental stock alongside newer subdivisions, across the campus-adjacent neighborhoods and the outer subdivisions, on Des Moines Lobe till — and that mix shapes what a sewer scope inspection here needs to find.

Local conditions in Ames

Ames sits on Des Moines Lobe till — heavy, poorly drained clay that holds water against foundations and moves with moisture, which is what drives basement seepage and foundation cracking across central Iowa. Ames sits in Story County, and every Iowa county is EPA Radon Zone 1. Iowa HHS reports Iowa has the largest percentage of homes above the 4.0 pCi/L action level of any state — 71.6 percent in the Iowa Radon Survey — and the Iowa seller disclosure form asks for any known radon test results. Finished basements concentrate it, and only a 48-hour test gives you this home's number. Iowa leaves frost depth to the local building code rather than one statewide number, and the annual freeze-thaw cycle drives the settlement cracks and ice-dam wear that Ames-area homes face.

Questions

Common questions.

Which homes need a sewer scope?
Any older home and any lot with mature trees. Root intrusion into aging clay laterals is one of the costliest defects a standard inspection cannot see.
Can a normal inspection check the sewer line?
No — the line is buried. Only a camera can reveal its true condition.
Is Ames rental housing different to inspect?
Yes. Campus-adjacent housing carries heavy rental history — divided units, added bedrooms, altered egress and years of deferred maintenance. All of it is worth knowing plainly, including anything that looks unpermitted.
