Thermal Imaging in Diagonal

Thermal Imaging in Diagonal, Ringgold County, by Closer Look Inspectors. Diagonal is a northwest Ringgold County town named for the diagonal crossing of two railroads, built after Goshen relocated to the crossing in 1889, and we calibrate every visit to that.

Infrared thermal imaging uses a calibrated thermal camera to surface hidden moisture, missing insulation and overheating electrical connections — available as an add-on or as a stand-alone thermal imaging inspection.

Tuned to Diagonal.

Diagonal housing runs to houses from the 1889 move and the railroad decades that followed, a stock built toward the town's 1940 peak of 603 residents, and later postwar and newer homes, across the townsite at the old railroad crossing, east of which the Grand River flows, and the farm ground and acreages around it, on loess-mantled hills of the Southern Iowa Drift Plain in Ringgold County, with the Grand River flowing past the east side of town — and that mix shapes what a thermal imaging here needs to find. Instrument-grade tools, a local eye, every visit.

Local conditions in Diagonal

No Iowa law requires a home inspection before a sale — the one mandatory time-of-transfer inspection covers private septic systems (Iowa Code 455B.172) — which makes an independent inspection the only thorough, buyer-side read on a Diagonal home. Diagonal sits in Ringgold County, and every Iowa county is EPA Radon Zone 1. Iowa HHS reports Iowa has the largest percentage of homes above the 4.0 pCi/L action level of any state — 71.6 percent in the Iowa Radon Survey — and the Iowa seller disclosure form asks for any known radon test results. Finished basements concentrate it, and only a 48-hour test gives you this home's number. Iowa leaves frost depth to the local building code rather than one statewide number, and the annual freeze-thaw cycle drives the settlement cracks and ice-dam wear we calibrate every Diagonal visit to find.

Questions

Common questions.

Do you offer thermal imaging?
Yes. Infrared scanning is available as an add-on.
What does it actually find?
Moisture tracking behind finishes, gaps in insulation, and hot electrical connections that are invisible to the naked eye.
Some of Diagonal's first buildings were moved from Goshen in 1889. What should I look for in a house that may have been moved or heavily altered?
Moved or altered buildings can have foundations that are newer than the framing above them, so we look for how the structure sits on its footings, cracks or settlement, uneven floors and doors that stick. We check the sill and floor framing for rot, the tie-in of any additions, and the electrical and plumbing for patchwork from different decades. Outside we look at grade and downspouts, since foundation water is the usual cause of the damage we find. If there is a private septic system, Iowa Code 455B.172 requires its inspection before transfer. Ringgold County is EPA Radon Zone 1, so we recommend a radon test.
