Well Water Testing in Cedar Mills

Well water testing for homes on a private well across Minnesota. We collect the sample the right way and send it to an accredited laboratory for coliform bacteria and E. coli, nitrate, arsenic, lead, manganese, iron, hardness, pH, fluoride, sulfate and uranium. The Minnesota Department of Health recommends testing a private well for coliform bacteria every year, nitrate every other year, and arsenic and lead at least once. We also look at the visible wellhead, the pressure tank and the water treatment equipment during the home inspection.

Cedar Mills is a tiny Meeker County city on the South Fork Crow River and the Luce Line Trail. Housing here runs to a small stock of older village houses from the railroad years, with a few newer homes among them, across the small townsite along Highway 7 and the Luce Line State Trail, near the grain elevator.

Well water in Meeker County

MDA's 2018 township testing in Meeker County covered two vulnerable townships and 245 wells, and 2.0% were over the 10 mg/L nitrate-nitrogen health standard. A low township-scale rate does not clear any single well. MDH says arsenic is elevated in central and west-central Minnesota and can differ sharply between neighbors because of glacial geology, and it lists coliform yearly, nitrate every other year, and arsenic and lead at least once. We test those plus manganese, iron, hardness, pH, fluoride, sulfate and uranium on an accredited lab report.

Questions

Common questions.

Who needs well water testing?
Any home on a private well, and above all when you are buying one. A private well is not regulated like a city water system, so the owner is responsible for knowing what is in the water. Testing before closing tells you whether the water needs treatment while you can still ask questions or negotiate.
What do you test for?
Our lab panel covers coliform bacteria and E. coli, nitrate, arsenic, lead, manganese, iron, hardness, pH, fluoride, sulfate and uranium. Bacteria and nitrate are the short-term health checks. Arsenic, lead, manganese and uranium are the ones you cannot see or taste. Iron, hardness, pH and sulfate explain staining, scale, odor and wear on plumbing and appliances.
How often should a well be tested?
The Minnesota Department of Health recommends coliform bacteria every year, nitrate every other year, and arsenic and lead at least once. Test again after flooding, after any work on the well, or if the taste, color or smell of the water changes.
Is well water testing part of the home inspection?
It is an add-on. Book it with the home inspection and we collect the sample the same visit, so the lab results arrive with time to act on them inside your inspection window.
How common is high nitrate in Meeker County wells?
MDA's 2018 initial sampling of two townships found 2.0% of 245 wells over the 10 mg/L health standard. That is low, but it describes townships, not your well. We test nitrate on an accredited report, and MDH lists it every other year for private wells. Coliform bacteria and E. coli are the pass-fail items lenders and buyers ask about first.
Cedar Mills sits on the South Fork Crow River — is flooding a concern?
It is worth asking about. The South Fork of the Crow River runs along the southwest border of Cedar Mills, which was laid out in 1860 and had a post office from 1870 to 1955. Houses closest to the river or to low ground can see wet basements in high-water years. We inspect grading, foundation walls, sump systems and any staining at the floor. In a city of only about 60 residents, any house that has sat vacant also gets a look for plumbing freeze damage, pests and roof condition.
