Well Water Testing in Kingston

Well water testing for homes on a private well across Minnesota. We collect the sample the right way and send it to an accredited laboratory for coliform bacteria and E. coli, nitrate, arsenic, lead, manganese, iron, hardness, pH, fluoride, sulfate and uranium. The Minnesota Department of Health recommends testing a private well for coliform bacteria every year, nitrate every other year, and arsenic and lead at least once. We also look at the visible wellhead, the pressure tank and the water treatment equipment during the home inspection.

Kingston is a North Fork Crow River village platted in 1857 that voted in 2013 to stay incorporated. Housing here runs to a small stock of older village homes from a townsite platted in 1857, plus a few mid-century and newer houses, across the small townsite and the farm ground beside Highway 15 along the North Fork of the Crow River.

Well water in Meeker County

MDA's 2018 township testing in Meeker County covered two vulnerable townships and 245 wells, and 2.0% were over the 10 mg/L nitrate-nitrogen health standard. A low township-scale rate does not clear any single well. MDH says arsenic is elevated in central and west-central Minnesota and can differ sharply between neighbors because of glacial geology, and it lists coliform yearly, nitrate every other year, and arsenic and lead at least once. We test those plus manganese, iron, hardness, pH, fluoride, sulfate and uranium on an accredited lab report.

Questions

Common questions.

Who needs well water testing?
Any home on a private well, and above all when you are buying one. A private well is not regulated like a city water system, so the owner is responsible for knowing what is in the water. Testing before closing tells you whether the water needs treatment while you can still ask questions or negotiate.
What do you test for?
Our lab panel covers coliform bacteria and E. coli, nitrate, arsenic, lead, manganese, iron, hardness, pH, fluoride, sulfate and uranium. Bacteria and nitrate are the short-term health checks. Arsenic, lead, manganese and uranium are the ones you cannot see or taste. Iron, hardness, pH and sulfate explain staining, scale, odor and wear on plumbing and appliances.
How often should a well be tested?
The Minnesota Department of Health recommends coliform bacteria every year, nitrate every other year, and arsenic and lead at least once. Test again after flooding, after any work on the well, or if the taste, color or smell of the water changes.
Is well water testing part of the home inspection?
It is an add-on. Book it with the home inspection and we collect the sample the same visit, so the lab results arrive with time to act on them inside your inspection window.
How common is high nitrate in Meeker County wells?
MDA's 2018 initial sampling of two townships found 2.0% of 245 wells over the 10 mg/L health standard. That is low, but it describes townships, not your well. We test nitrate on an accredited report, and MDH lists it every other year for private wells. Coliform bacteria and E. coli are the pass-fail items lenders and buyers ask about first.
Is a very small city like Kingston a concern when buying an older house?
Not by itself, but it means we check services and age closely. Kingston was platted in 1857, its post office ran until 1907, and the 2020 Census counted 184 residents. In 2013 voters chose 36 to 23 against dissolving the city, so it remains its own municipality. On an older village house we confirm whether water and sewer are municipal or private, then inspect wiring age, plumbing materials, foundation, roof and chimney, and moisture near the North Fork of the Crow River. If there is a private well, we recommend a water test.
