MDA's 2018 township testing in Kanabec County covered Southfork Township, where 115 wells were tested and 4.3% were over the 10 mg/L nitrate-nitrogen health standard. It is one township, so use it as a hint, not a rule. MDH says arsenic is elevated in central and west-central Minnesota and can swing between neighboring wells, and lists coliform yearly, nitrate every other year, and arsenic and lead at least once. We test those plus manganese, iron, hardness, pH, fluoride, sulfate and uranium through an accredited lab.

Who needs well water testing?
Any home on a private well, and above all when you are buying one. A private well is not regulated like a city water system, so the owner is responsible for knowing what is in the water. Testing before closing tells you whether the water needs treatment while you can still ask questions or negotiate.
What do you test for?
Our lab panel covers coliform bacteria and E. coli, nitrate, arsenic, lead, manganese, iron, hardness, pH, fluoride, sulfate and uranium. Bacteria and nitrate are the short-term health checks. Arsenic, lead, manganese and uranium are the ones you cannot see or taste. Iron, hardness, pH and sulfate explain staining, scale, odor and wear on plumbing and appliances.
How often should a well be tested?
The Minnesota Department of Health recommends coliform bacteria every year, nitrate every other year, and arsenic and lead at least once. Test again after flooding, after any work on the well, or if the taste, color or smell of the water changes.
Is well water testing part of the home inspection?
It is an add-on. Book it with the home inspection and we collect the sample the same visit, so the lab results arrive with time to act on them inside your inspection window.
What did MDA find in Kanabec County wells?
In Southfork Township's 2018 testing, 4.3% of 115 wells were over the 10 mg/L nitrate health standard. That is one township. Because arsenic can vary between nearby wells, MDH advises testing for it at least once. We run nitrate and arsenic on the same accredited report. The lab report also covers lead, manganese and iron, so one sample answers several buyer questions.
Quamba was once called Mud Creek — does that affect houses?
It is a clue to check drainage. The community began as Mud Creek on a Great Northern sidetrack in 1882, was platted in 1901 and incorporated as a village in 1952, and its name is said to come from a word meaning muddy hole. Low ground here can hold water after thaw and storms. We look at grading, sump and basement moisture, sill and rim-joist condition, and private well and septic systems. It is the only Minnesota city starting with Q, but the inspection is standard.
