A county seat built on the railroad

Glencoe became the McLeod County seat when the county was organized in 1856. A National Register registration form says the city boomed when the Hastings and Dakota Railway arrived in 1872, followed by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, changing Glencoe from a small settlement to a trade center. The form, written for the two-story brick high school completed in 1933, describes the school as east of the downtown commercial district (Minnesota State Highway 15) and south of the Crow River.

The McLeod County Courthouse shows how older buildings grow in stages. A National Register nomination describes it as sited in the heart of downtown Glencoe, with a first structure built in 1876 that has been greatly altered, a large front portion completed in 1909, and a 1958 addition attached to the west side. Layers like these meet at roofs, walls and mechanical rooms, which is where older buildings tend to show their age.

A city flyer posted in 2017 describes a 1.3-acre downtown site that was formerly the location of a grocery store, with the structure since removed.

Rail hub, Highway 212 and the East Industrial Park

The city's economic development page says Glencoe is the operating hub for all TC&W trains. TC&W is the Twin Cities & Western Railroad, and it interchanges with BNSF Railway, Canadian Pacific Railway, Union Pacific and the Canadian National Railway. US Highway 212 is a four-lane highway running east to west through Glencoe. The city's East Industrial Park listing notes access to US Highway 212.

Industrial and warehouse buildings along a rail and highway corridor take heavy truck traffic, loading dock wear and large roofs. Slab and joint condition at the docks, roof drainage, and the electrical service that feeds equipment are the usual questions.

A data center on 11th Street West

Revolve Labs says on its community page, which links a community presentation dated September 8, 2026, that it is building a new AI data center at 670 11th Street West. The company describes the project footprint as about the size of a small warehouse facility, on 6.25 acres, with a target completion of April 2027. The sound study it posted modeled 18 dry coolers.

Data centers concentrate electrical and cooling equipment in a way few other buildings do. At that scale, heat is how the equipment shows stress, and a thermal camera reads it directly.

Quick answers

What older buildings are documented in downtown Glencoe?

A National Register nomination describes the McLeod County Courthouse, in the heart of downtown, with a first structure built in 1876, a large front portion completed in 1909 and a 1958 addition on the west side. Glencoe became the county seat when McLeod County was organized in 1856, and the city boomed after the railroad arrived in 1872.

Why does the railroad matter to Glencoe's commercial buildings?

The city says Glencoe is the operating hub for all TC&W trains, and TC&W interchanges with four other railroads. Industrial buildings near rail and Highway 212 take heavy loads, dock wear and large roofs, so slab, dock and roof condition are the usual questions.

What is being built at 670 11th Street West?

Revolve Labs says it is building a data center there, with a footprint about the size of a small warehouse facility on 6.25 acres and a target completion of April 2027. Data centers concentrate electrical and cooling equipment, which is where heat patterns matter.
